What I Find Interesting About History
Hi guys, my name is Whitney Unanue and this is my last semester at MiraCosta. I am currently waiting to hear back from a bunch of UCs! I am a political science major and I also intend to double major in history. This semester I am in honors US history post civil war, and am contracting American military history. My journey with history has been a long one…I initially hated history but thanks to Professor Sleeper, I have now come to learn that I actually LOVE history and only was disinterested in early western civilization. After studying Andrew Jackson in depth last semester, United States history has won my heart and I cannot wait to see what the second half of the course holds this semester. I find history most interesting in that the comparisons between the past and present day are so often overlooked by those who are not familiar with notable historic events, but for historians, it is so easy to see the connections. Particularly, this is of importance when so many people are making aggressive and opinionated statements regarding the current political climate. Being knowledgable about history is essential in taking a well informed position, especially when you are likely to be under attack in this highly polarized environment.
Whitney, great observation about making connections between the past and present. I too find this an important tool for putting current events into perspective.
