Waterplay is essential and unavoidable in toddlerhood. The property of water is ever changing and calming that children are naturally attracted to it. We provide open ended water play both indoor and outdoor on a daily basis. The “river” in our yard was placed in the grassy area which invites the children to take off their shoes and splash in it on a hot sunny day. We turned on the water and observe the children as they interacted with it.
Some children took their shoes off immediately, others watched a bit before doing so. The teachers suggested that the children use a rain gutter to alter the direction of the flow.
