Week One Post: Introduction

Greetings! My name is Diane and I teach Spanish at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, CA. I am a native San Diegan, with family from Mexico. I also work with English Learners and their parents at elementary schools in Oceanside. I am a mother.

I’m a little behind in this course but I’ve started reading and I’m thrilled with learning about how to teach online. I already use several internet tools to teach my “on the ground” classes, but I have so much more to learn! I used to think that a foreign language could not be taught online, because of all the valuable interaction and conversation done in class. With the advent of so much technology I see that, while not the same, it can be simulated fairly well. I see online teaching in my future.

I’m excited to meet other people in this course from mine and other fields, and from different parts of the world (especially Latin America). I will appreciate all your comments and advice.

    Hello Julie and welcome!
I am playing catch up in the course as well, and just saw your post.
I teach conflict resolution (amongst other things) and was concerned that the content (perhaps like teaching a language) would not work online, but am finding creative ideas keep emerging that thicken both my face to face and online teaching. Hope the same happens for you….

Thank you. Joy, yes, I would also think your particular subject would have inherent reasons for it to be more effective face to face. Glad to hear you’re getting creative ideas and thanks for the encouragement.
