Waterplay is essential and unavoidable in toddlerhood. The property of water is ever changing and calming that children are naturally attracted to it. We provide open ended water play both indoor and outdoor on a daily basis. The “river” in our yard was placed in the grassy area which invites the children to take off their shoes and splash in it on a hot sunny day. We turned on the water and observe the children as they interacted with it.
Some children took their shoes off immediately, others watched a bit before doing so. The teachers suggested that the children use a rain gutter to alter the direction of the flow.

Making Flubber

Today we made flubber with the children after snack. If you have not experienced what flubber felt like, it is a substance that is created by combining glue, water, and borax. It is intially cool to the touch and very bouncy. After handling the substance, it gets warmer and more piliable. We read the recipe out loud to the children and asked them to help out with measuring and stirring. We talked about the transforming of liquid to solid as the borax mixture was added to the glue mixture.
As children explored flubber, they used their small muscles on their fingers to poke, stretch, and shape it. Practicing small muscle control help the children to handle writing tools and will eventually lead to writing.

If you are interested in making your own flubber here is a recipe:

We discovered Flubber at the kids’ day event. The girls loved playing with it! Here’s the recipe.

Flubber

Mixture 1:

1 ½ cups warm water

2 cups Elmer’s Glue

Food coloring

Mixture 2:

3 tsp. Borax

1 cup Warm Water

Stir mixture 1 together in 1 bowl.

Mixture 2 in another bowl.

Make sure both are mixed well.

Pour mixture 1 into mixture 2.

There is no need to stir the mixture but you can if you want because it is the chemical reaction that actually makes the flubber. When it is in a glob work it for 2-3 minutes. Initially it feels wet but it eventually dries up to the final product.

Enjoy!

Planning for Week 2

Hello Everyone:

We had a great first week of school so far.  We plan the enviroment of the classroom base on observation and discussion with the teaching team.  For the second week of school, we kept most of the materials from before because the children were still interested in exploring them.  Please note the “New” section for changes and teacher directed focuses that will occur in each interest areas.

Have a great weekend!

Exploring Scicence through Art

DSC09735

The children experimented with color mixing today while working in the Outdoor Art Studio.  Concepts such as cause and effect, probelm solving, and curiosity were explored through painting.  While painting, the teachers prompedt the children to observe the texture of the paints, the colors before and after mixing, and the various shapes or forms that imprinted on to the paper.

Second “First” Day of School

Today was the first day of school for most of the children in Room 2.  We enjoyed the outside Art Studio and feeding our pet rabbit “Bun, Bun”.  We view the outdoor as an extension to our classroom enviroment.  Not only are children able to develop large motor skills such as running, jumping and climbing, they are also given the oppourtunity to engage in quiet activities such as reading, working on a puzzle or quielty observing nature.

We had a wonderful first day of school. The children explored everywhere. Some of the favorite activities included cooking in the home area, the slide in door, block building.
Before the end of the day, we danced to “Listen and Move”. Through music and movement children get to connect with each other as well as exploring their large muscles.
