Discussing relevance to today

Hello Honors Students,

Arabella of Mars was due last night – thank you, Kaitlin and Gabriela for doing it on time and writing such thought-provoking posts!

We do need to talk a little more about why the Victorian era is so fascinating to us now, during current times.

There has been a revival of interest in Méliès’ A Trip to the Moon – we will see that this week as we watch Hugo. Why might that be? Why would Arabella of Mars have been written now, during our era?

And I again ask the question for Hugo: Why would this film have been popular in recent times?

Let’s consider all the current works we’ve seen (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Trip to the Moon, Arabella, and Hugo) as part of this week’s work.

We are at Week 12. Those who have fallen far behind may submit posts this late, but they will in no way earn full credit from this point. Our Honors adventure is almost complete!

After Hugo, we finish The Victorians, and then your presentation or paper is due. Please consult with me to get approval for your format – here’s the note from the Honors syllabus:

Throughout the parent course, you will be developing a theme based on your own interests. For the final project/paper, you may combine that theme with the Victorian era to provide examples, or you may choose to focus on the Victorian science/technology combination. Topic and format (visual presentation, formal paper, etc) will be individually decided with the instructor.

Have a great week!

Lisa
