Tuesday Flexapalooza

C3 Center for Teaching and Learning

The rigors of my involvement with yesterday’s New Faculty Orientation and the inauguration of our new Portable Teaching and Learning Center prevent me from doing justice in this post to the amazing range of workshops our colleagues are offering today.

You can see the complete list of all 27 possibilities here. Look in particular for a suite of workshops being offered at the San Elijo campus this afternoon / evening. Here are a few highlights of the day I wish to briefly underscore:

They’re Here! They’re Here! The Associates Are Here!

Today our associate colleagues bring their passion for student success, wide-ranging perspectives, and commitment to teaching excellence back to campus for the fall semester as they participate in the Associate Faculty Orientation, the Academic Associate Luncheon, and an Associate Faculty Governance Update.

Although open to all faculty, today’s Get the Scoop on the Writing Center session was scheduled after these other formal associate faculty sessions to make sure our associate colleagues would have a chance to drop in and find out more about how our amazing Writing Center can support their work.

Here’s to the Teachers

From PG&E sessions on the six and three year tenure processes and a session about partnering with the CSUSM to support students wishing to pursue teaching careers, another interesting strand today revolves on workshops focused on the profession of teaching. Lynne Miller introduces us to a new effort to develop a mentoring program where full-time faculty offer guidance to their associate colleagues, our long running book discussion group meets to help us keep our minds and hearts open to a changing world, and teaching colleagues share their success with peer review and student engagement pedagogies. Sessions on MCC’s core competencies, constructing honors contracts and supporting undocumented students promote our teaching and learning community’s commitment to expanding opportunities for MiraCosta’s students.

Scholarscapes Approaches

On Thursday from 11-1 in the boardroom, PDP launches what we hope will become a regular series of flex offerings: Scholarscapes, MiraCosta Profs Share Big Ideas

In a series of three short TED talk style presentations (each followed by a brief group discussion and Q and A) faculty members will celebrate the life of the mind and intellectual passions that inspire our faculty. Three courageous colleagues have volunteered to inaugurate this new festival of ideas:

Lynne MillerLynne Miller (Anthropology)
Technology + Teamwork: The Right Recipe for Scientific Breakthroughs

Billy Gunn (Film)
Choices

Sean DavisSean Davis (Sociology)
Learning by Doing: Creating Meaningful Experiences for Students

These sessions are open to everyone in the campus community, and we hope you will join us for all or part of this event.
