This is just a quick reminder that flex week begins tomorrow with ten flex workshops.
PDP has prepared a revised PDF calendar of our flex week events — please check it (see our Canvas home page) or myflex for any last minute changes (there have been several rooms adjustments and a few time / date shifts). It is always a good idea to double-check your workshop times one last time before heading out the door!
Last semester, the Academic Senate chose Laura Rendon’s Sentipensante (Sensing / Thinking) Pedagogy as one of two shared faculty reads for the coming year.
I would like to begin our look at the relationship between flex week and our teaching and learning discussion by reminding everyone that reading Rendon’s book is a great way to earn flex credit on your own schedule while joining a campus-wide conversation.

The time has come to begin our preparations for our Spring 2018 flex week from January 12-19.
Flex week has tremendous potential to energize our shared commitment to MiraCosta’s students, but it can only achieve that goal when we all step up to create, share, and engage. Let’s share some of the amazing work we are doing with each other; let’s learn from each other’s ideas and experiences; let’s bring what we have learned from the reading we have done, research we have explored, and conferences we have attended to our campus community for our colleagues to think about too.

But don’t worry, if you forget about this momentous change in the history of the college — nay, the history of higher education itself — you will find a redirect link at our old site: Old, Abandoned, and Shamelessly Discarded Site.
Please take the time to explore the new site; I think you will be able to complete a quick tour in no more than 10 to 15 hours.

The rigors of my involvement with yesterday’s New Faculty Orientation and the inauguration of our new Portable Teaching and Learning Center prevent me from doing justice in this post to the amazing range of workshops our colleagues are offering today.
The professional development drama continues today with the new full-time faculty continuing their orientation process and attending a reception hosted by their lodestars. Simultaneously (I know, I know, it’s simply unbelievable…) the Guided Pathways leadership team steps out with their first round of offerings (also available Wednesday afternoon), the Canvas team continues to strut their stuff, some colleagues share teaching strategies and experiences, and a variety of cool equity and student success workshops round out a sixteen session Flexorama of a day.
New Faculty Come Together!
The joy abounds today as our new full-time faculty arrive on campus to begin the epic journey that is new faculty orientation, and the second year faculty return for a day long retreat focused on pedagogy.
