Joyful Tidings #31 Scholarscapes and Re-Imagining Flex Week

Greetings MiraCostans:

In an effort to encourage new ways of thinking about flex week, PDP asked three of our faculty colleagues to share TED style talks followed by discussion and Q and A at an event we called ScholarScapes: Miracosta Profs Share Big Ideas

The goal was to invite some of our colleagues to share some of the big ideas they were interested in — as scholars, as educators, as human beings. When they presented their ideas, we live broadcasted them and also video recorded them for future use. And now we are going to begin to share these archived tools with the MiraCosta community for” just in time” professional development opportunities!

Lynne Miller: Technology and Teamwork
The Right Recipe for Scientific Breakthroughs

Known among her students and colleagues as an extraordinary lecturer, Lynne delivered a dynamic, carefully prepared talk on an idea that grabbed her attention, inspired her to research and investigate, and motivated her to share.

By focusing on explosions in human knowledge about memory, Lynne presented a fascinating example of  how technology and teamwork come together to open up new opportunities and challenges.

Lynne's Memory Network

You can watch a TED talk version here (it features only her presentation) or watch the full length version (which features the Q and A as well) here.

If you are interested in a follow up conversation, you can post a comment to this blog post or visit the ScholarScapes section on our PDP Canvas page (listed under Project Joy) and post a comment there (you do need to join the PDP Canvas course but that only takes a few seconds and the click of a button). Either way, your query, question, response, suggestion, reflection, etc. will makes its way to Lynne and she will share some thoughts in response (right Lynne?).

We hope you will enjoy Lynne’s presentation for its own sake but also find in it some inspiration for the possibilities available to us when we think beyond the confines of the traditional flex workshop. Perhaps initiatives like ScholarScapes will help us begin to see flex week as more of a kick off to our professional development process rather than its primary focus point.

And, perhaps, this post reminds you of a cool idea you have for sharing via a flex activity. If so, check out the Call for Flex Proposals and start sharing!

Thanks for joining the journey if only for a few minutes out of your busy day.

And many thanks to Lynne Miller for being so generous with her time and intellectual gifts!
