Our focus is on pedagogy as the guiding force for using technologies for teaching.

Many of us are from MiraCosta College in Oceanside, California. MiraCostans may access the Teaching/Technology Innovations Center for technical help, resources, news and more.

2:00-2:50 Jim Sullivan’s More Than a Passing Fancy: How Blogs Are Enriching Online Teaching and Learning
Explore some of the ways that blogs have evolved as online teaching tools by learning about different approaches to using blogs and visiting courses that use blogs to share resources and present student work. This workshop will present some principles, give you some time to tour the blogosphere, and connect you to resources to help you set up and use a blog for a class or for your own professional development. This workshop is sponsored by the Program for Online Teaching. This workshop is immediately after the first Friday workshop about blogs and online teaching. The face-to-face setting may provide an opportunity to continue the discussion about blogging or go into different interests that are brought up by the instructors in attendance. Please bring questions and ideas. Faculty will benefit from this workshop by learning tips to improve instruction. Students will potentially benefit as participants may be able to create new learning experiences for them based upon what is discussed in the workshop.

2:00-2:50 Sue Simpson’s Creating Meaningful Discussion in an Asynchronous Environment
How do you encourage dialogue among students, regarding current and topical subject matter, in an asynchronous environment? Wimba voiceboard allows simulation of the classroom discussion without requiring students to write excessively.“In many virtual learning environments, student and instructor communication is limited to text and static images.  Important elements of face-to-face communication, including the nuances of voice, are missing from text-based discussions.  Wimba Voice recaptures these elements, contributing to greater clarity and understanding. With over 175 million users, Twitter has become one of the most used social media tools on the planet.  But did you know that there is much more to Twitter than telling people what you are doing?  A variety of exciting techniques have been developed to bring Twitter into the classroom to generate new and vibrant connections with our students.  In this session you will create a twitter account, learn the basic functions of Twitter, and understand specific applications for online and face-to-face classroom interactions. Discover a world where we can truly be paper free. Whether you own an iPad or are just thinking about getting an iPad, this first iPad Friday workshop will demonstrate iPad apps that can make our lives as a MiraCosta faculty or staff member easier. The apps that we will explore include: Note Taker HD, iAnnotate PDF, Outliner, and Attendance.
